PART 9 – Christmas Eve, my husband sent me a mistress photo. By sunrise, our apartment was empty.
I stared at the photograph on my phone, reading the same two names over and over.
Mother: Evelyn Whitcomb.
Father: Thomas Whitcomb.
My grandfather.
My grandmother’s husband.
And Evelyn was my grandmother’s identical twin sister.
I felt physically sick.
If the birth certificate was genuine, Daniel Harris was the son of my grandfather and his own sister-in-law.
And someone had spent more than thirty years making sure nobody discovered it.
But one question terrified me more than anything else.
Did Daniel know?
I immediately forwarded the photograph to Detective Collins.
Within minutes, she called.
“Lauren, where did you get this?”
“An unknown number. The same person who’s been sending me messages.”
“Have you contacted Daniel?”
“No.”
“Good. Don’t confront him. We need to authenticate this document before drawing conclusions.”
I swallowed.
“But if it’s real, Daniel is my grandfather’s son.”
“That would be a serious revelation, yes. But a photograph of a record isn’t proof by itself.”
I pressed my hand against my forehead.
“Detective, my grandmother left a recording about a missing child. There’s a photograph of a baby named Daniel. And now this.”
“I understand why you’re connecting them.”
“Then please tell me what’s happening.”
She hesitated.
“Lauren, we have also discovered inconsistencies in Daniel Harris’s early adoption records.”
My heart stopped.
“Adoption?”
“Yes. According to the records we located, Daniel was placed with another family shortly after birth.”
“Does he know?”
“We haven’t determined that.”
I closed my eyes.
For years, Daniel had been the respected attorney my grandmother trusted with her estate.
But what if she’d hired him because she knew exactly who he was?
What if she’d spent decades trying to protect him from the truth?
And what if Daniel had eventually discovered everything?
At 10:14 the following morning, Detective Collins arranged another meeting with Catherine.
This time, the conversation took place in a secure interview room.
I sat across from my great-aunt, watching her twist a handkerchief between her trembling fingers.
“Catherine,” I whispered, “I need you to tell me about Daniel.”
She looked up sharply.
“What about him?”
“I saw a birth certificate.”
The color drained from her face.
“Lauren…”
“It names Evelyn as his mother. And Thomas Whitcomb as his father.”
Catherine closed her eyes.
For several seconds, she didn’t speak.
Then tears began sliding down her cheeks.
“I prayed you’d never have to learn that part of our history.”
My chest tightened.
“So it’s true?”
“I knew Evelyn had a baby. I knew Thomas was accused of being the father. But I never saw the original birth records.”
I leaned forward.
“Accused?”
Catherine nodded painfully.
“Evelyn was nineteen. Thomas was nearly forty. He controlled the family’s money, the house, and almost every decision we were allowed to make.”
I felt my stomach turn.
“What happened?”
“Evelyn became pregnant. Thomas insisted the baby be placed for adoption. He claimed a scandal would destroy the family.”
“And Grandma?”
“Your grandmother was devastated. She wanted Evelyn and the baby to be safe, but Thomas threatened to cut off everyone financially if they challenged him.”
I looked down at my hands.
The grandfather I’d been taught to admire suddenly seemed like a stranger.
“Did Evelyn agree to the adoption?”
Catherine shook her head.
“She signed documents, but she later told me she’d been pressured and hadn’t understood what she was giving up.”
I swallowed hard.
“And the baby was Daniel?”
“We believe so.”
“Then why didn’t anyone tell him?”
Catherine wiped her eyes.
“Because by the time we tried to find him, his identity had been changed. The adoption was closed, and Thomas made sure the records were difficult to trace.”
I sat back, stunned.
Then another thought struck me.
“Was that why Grandma hired Daniel?”
Catherine hesitated.
“I believe your grandmother eventually discovered where he was. But she never told me whether she revealed the truth to him.”
My heart ached.
Daniel had spent years helping my family while potentially standing at the center of its darkest secret.
But that didn’t explain his involvement with Cole.
Or the hidden documents.
Or Grandma’s disappearance.
“Catherine,” I asked quietly, “why was Grandma afraid of Daniel?”
My great-aunt looked toward the door.
Then she said something that chilled me.
“Because someone told Daniel that your grandmother was responsible for taking him away from his mother.”
I froze.
“Who told him?”
Catherine’s expression darkened.
“Victor Langford.”
Cole’s father.
The man who had helped my grandfather conceal fraudulent financial transactions.
Even after his reported death, his lies were still tearing my family apart.
At 11:38 a.m., Detective Collins entered the room.
She looked unusually serious.
“Lauren, Catherine, there’s something you both need to know.”
I stood immediately.
“Is it Grandma?”
“We’ve located the facility where the woman believed to be your grandmother was transferred.”
My heart began pounding.
“Is she alive?”
“Yes.”
The word hit me so hard I grabbed the back of my chair.
“She’s alive?”
“An elderly woman matching her description is alive and receiving medical care. Identification procedures are underway, but we have strong reasons to believe she’s your grandmother.”
Tears flooded my eyes.
“Can I see her?”
“We’re arranging that as soon as it’s safe and medically appropriate.”
I covered my mouth, sobbing.
For four years, I’d mourned her.
For four years, I’d believed I’d never hear her voice again.
And now she might finally be coming home.
But Detective Collins wasn’t finished.
“There’s another development. Evelyn has also been located.”
Catherine gasped.
“Evelyn?”
“Yes. She’s receiving care at a separate location.”
I watched Catherine’s entire face change.
For the first time since I’d met her, she looked genuinely hopeful.
“My sister,” she whispered. “My little sister.”
Then the detective continued.
“Evelyn has provided a preliminary statement. She claims the three sisters were separated after discovering an effort to obtain control of their trusts.”
I swallowed.
“By Cole?”
“She identified Cole, but she also mentioned someone she called ‘the attorney’s son.’”
My stomach tightened.
“Daniel?”
“We’re working to clarify who she meant.”
I couldn’t understand it.
Daniel was the attorney.
If he was also Evelyn’s son, why would she refer to him that way?
Unless there was another attorney.
Another person connected to the family.
Another secret still waiting to be uncovered.
At 2:06 p.m., Rachel contacted me with news from the financial investigation.
“Lauren, we found something concerning in the transactions involving Bennett Capital Partners.”
“More stolen money?”
“Potentially. But this is about control of the trust.”
I leaned forward.
“What happened?”
“A transfer request was submitted three days ago. It attempted to move a substantial portion of the Whitcomb assets into a newly registered company.”
“Whose company?”
Rachel paused.
“Langford Heritage Holdings.”
My throat tightened.
“Cole?”
“He appears in the supporting documents, but the company lists another controlling officer.”
“Who?”
“A man named Adrian Harris.”
I frowned.
“Harris?”
“Yes.”
“Is he related to Daniel?”
“We haven’t confirmed that yet.”
I pressed my fingers against my forehead.
Every time I thought I understood the conspiracy, another name appeared.
“Rachel, how much money are we talking about?”
“Potentially more than forty million dollars, depending on the valuation of the underlying property.”
I stopped breathing.
Forty million.
My grandmother had spent years fighting to protect our family.
And Cole had apparently been willing to destroy our lives for a fortune.
“Was the transfer completed?”
“No. It has been flagged and challenged. But the attempt itself is significant.”
I closed my eyes in relief.
Then Rachel added, “Lauren, there’s one more thing. Adrian Harris has the same birth date as Daniel.”
My eyes opened.
“The same day?”
“Yes.”
I felt something cold settle in my stomach.
“Could they be twins?”
“We don’t have evidence of that yet.”
But suddenly, I remembered the old photograph of the baby wrapped in a yellow blanket.
The name Daniel written beneath it.
And the way Grandma had cried while looking at the picture.
What if she’d been crying because there had been two babies?
At 4:22 p.m., Catherine called me again.
Her voice was trembling.
“Lauren, I’ve been thinking about what you told me.”
“About Daniel?”
“Yes.”
I sat upright.
“What is it?”
“When Evelyn gave birth, I wasn’t allowed into her hospital room. Thomas claimed there had been complications.”
My pulse quickened.
“But?”
“But I remember hearing a nurse arguing with him in the corridor.”
“About what?”
Catherine took a shaky breath.
“She said he couldn’t simply change the number of children listed on the medical records.”
I gripped the phone.
“Catherine…”
“I didn’t understand it then. I thought the nurse was confused.”
My heart hammered.
“Are you saying Evelyn had twins?”
“I don’t know, sweetheart. But I think it’s possible.”
I stared at the floor.
Daniel Harris.
Adrian Harris.
Two men with the same birthday.
One was my grandmother’s attorney.
The other was apparently trying to obtain the family fortune.
And both might be connected to the same birth thirty years earlier.
Suddenly, the puzzle looked entirely different.
But the worst discovery came that evening.
At 7:19 p.m., Detective Collins called.
“Lauren, we’ve received preliminary information about Adrian Harris.”
I held my breath.
“Tell me.”
“He has used several addresses over the years, including one associated with a Langford family business.”
“Cole’s family?”
“Yes.”
My stomach sank.
“Do you think Adrian is working with Cole?”
“We’re investigating their relationship.”
Then the detective lowered her voice.
“Lauren, Adrian may have been present at Rosehaven under a different name.”
I gripped my phone.
“Visiting Grandma?”
“Possibly.”
I closed my eyes.
Someone had been visiting the facility where my grandmother was allegedly kept under a false identity.
Someone connected to the fortune.
Someone whose existence Daniel had never mentioned.
And suddenly, I remembered Catherine’s warning.
Cole was only doing what he was told.
What if Adrian was the person giving orders?
At 8:43 p.m., my phone vibrated.
An unfamiliar number.
A text message appeared.
“Lauren, stop looking for Adrian. Some brothers are better left separated.”
My breath caught.
Brothers.
Not cousins.
Not strangers.
Brothers.
A second message followed.
“Daniel doesn’t know what Adrian did to your grandmother. And if he finds out, he won’t survive the truth.”
I immediately forwarded both messages to Detective Collins.
Then, against my better judgment, I typed one question.
“Who are you?”
The answer arrived seconds later.
“Someone who was there the night Evelyn gave birth.”
My hands began trembling.
I stared at the screen.
Another message appeared.
“There were two boys, Lauren. One was placed with a loving family. The other was taken by Victor Langford.”
I felt the room tilt.
One baby raised as Daniel Harris.
The other raised somewhere within the Langford family’s influence.
And now both were connected to the same stolen inheritance.
Then the final message appeared.
“If you want to know what happened to your grandmother, ask Adrian why he ordered Cole to make her disappear.”
I sat frozen.
So Cole hadn’t acted alone.
Daniel might not have known he had a brother.
And Adrian, the man who appeared to be helping Cole steal the family fortune, might have been the child Evelyn had lost alongside Daniel.
But before I could process any of it, Emily rushed into the room.
“Lauren, there’s something on the news.”
She turned her phone toward me.
A photograph of a handsome middle-aged man appeared beneath a breaking headline.
“LOCAL FINANCIAL EXECUTIVE FOUND DEAD IN DOWNTOWN PARKING GARAGE.”
My heart stopped.
The photograph showed Daniel Harris.
I screamed.
“No!”
Emily gripped my shoulder.
But as I looked closer, I noticed something.
The man had Daniel’s face.
His eyes.
His dark hair.
But there was a small scar beneath his chin.
Daniel didn’t have that scar.
I had seen him often enough to know.
My hands shook as I read the name beneath the photograph.
ADRIAN HARRIS.
My breath caught.
Adrian was dead.
The mysterious brother who might have orchestrated everything had apparently been killed before I could meet him.
Then my phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered with trembling fingers.
“Daniel?”
His voice sounded strained.
“Lauren, don’t believe what they’re saying on the news.”
I swallowed.
“Adrian is dead.”
“I know.”
“Was he your brother?”
A long silence followed.
Then Daniel whispered, “Yes.”
I closed my eyes.
“You knew?”
“I found out three weeks ago.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because Adrian was threatening everyone connected to the Whitcomb trust.”
I pressed a hand against my forehead.
“Did he have something to do with Grandma’s disappearance?”
Daniel’s breathing became uneven.
“Lauren, listen carefully. Adrian wasn’t acting alone.”
My heart pounded.
“Who was helping him?”
Daniel hesitated.
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
“The person who ordered your grandmother’s disappearance is still alive. And you’ve trusted that person since the day you were born.”
I stopped breathing.
“Who?”
Before Daniel could answer, I heard a loud crash.
Then a muffled voice shouted something in the background.
“Daniel?”
No answer.
“Daniel!”
A sharp sound echoed through the phone.
The call disconnected.
I stood frozen, staring at the screen.
Then an unknown number sent me a photograph.
It showed Daniel tied to a chair in a dark room.
A piece of paper hung around his neck.
Three words were written across it.
“ONE BROTHER LEFT.”
And beneath the photograph, someone had typed:
“Lauren, your grandmother is waiting for you. Come alone, or Daniel joins Adrian.”
For the first time, I realized that finding my grandmother might be the most dangerous thing I had ever done.
Because whoever had spent thirty years protecting the family’s secrets was no longer trying to hide them.
They were eliminating everyone who knew the truth.
And now they wanted me…….
