PART 2 – The morning after my wealthy husband died, €150,000 appeared—his son called it my payment.

PART 2: THE BOY IN THE PHOTOGRAPH
“Dad promised he would never tell her.” Alexandre’s words hung in the air like a threat. For several seconds, nobody moved. I stared at the photograph lying on Mr. Laurent’s desk, trying to understand why a picture of my dead husband, an unfamiliar woman, and a little boy had frightened my stepson so badly. “Alexandre,” I whispered, “who is that child?”

He looked away.
“It’s none of your business, Isabelle.”
“None of my business?” My voice trembled. “Your father left me a letter saying he had hidden something from me for years. And you clearly know what it is.”
Catherine suddenly stood.
“This meeting is becoming ridiculous. Philippe was sick when he wrote those letters. We should question whether he was thinking clearly.”
Mr. Laurent calmly adjusted his glasses.

“Madame Catherine, your brother underwent an independent medical evaluation before signing his final will. He was fully capable of making his own decisions.”
Catherine’s expression tightened.
Then the lawyer turned toward me.
“Madame Moreau, before I explain the photograph, you need to understand something about the €150,000 deposited into your account this morning.”
I gripped the arms of my chair.

“What about it?”
“That money did not come from your husband’s estate.”
My stomach dropped.
“Then where did it come from?”
Mr. Laurent opened another folder.
“It was transferred from an account controlled by Alexandre.”
I turned toward my stepson.
He was staring at the floor.

“Why would you send me that money?” I demanded.
Alexandre finally looked up.
“Because Dad wanted you taken care of.”
“No,” Mr. Laurent interrupted firmly. “Your father left very different instructions.”
He placed a document in front of me.
It was a copy of a bank transfer authorization bearing Alexandre’s signature.
Attached was a letter dated three weeks before Philippe died.
Mr. Laurent began reading.
“Alexandre has repeatedly asked me to remove Isabelle from my will. He believes she deserves nothing because she entered our family as an employee. If he attempts to offer her money in exchange for surrendering her inheritance rights, this letter must be presented.”
I stopped breathing.
Alexandre shot to his feet.
“That letter proves nothing!”
“It proves your father anticipated exactly what you would do,” Mr. Laurent replied.
I felt a strange mixture of grief and anger rising inside me.
For twenty-three years, I had defended Alexandre whenever Philippe complained about his spending, his arrogance, or his refusal to accept responsibility.
I had loved that boy as my own.
And now he had tried to buy me out of my marriage for €150,000.
But the photograph still troubled me.
“Please,” I said quietly. “Tell me about the child.”
Mr. Laurent hesitated.
Then he turned the photograph over.
“His name is Lucas.”
The name meant nothing to me.
Until the lawyer added, “He was seven years old when this photograph was taken.”
I studied the little boy’s face.
The dark eyes.
The familiar shape of his mouth.
The small dimple in his chin.
My heart began pounding.
“He looks like Philippe.”
Nobody answered.
I felt tears burning behind my eyes.
“Was my husband having an affair?”
Catherine let out a nervous laugh.
“Honestly, Isabelle, not everything is about you.”
But Mr. Laurent shook his head.
“No. Lucas is not Philippe’s son.”
I stared at him.
“Then who is he?”
The lawyer looked directly at Alexandre.
“Lucas is Alexandre’s son.”
The silence that followed was unbearable.
I looked from the photograph to my stepson.
“You have a child?”
Alexandre’s jaw tightened.
“Yes.”
“How old is he now?”
“Twelve.”
Twelve.
For twelve years, Alexandre had been a father.
For twelve years, a little boy had existed somewhere in the world while I knew absolutely nothing about him.
“But why would Philippe hide his own grandson from me?” I asked.
Mr. Laurent’s expression darkened.
“Because the circumstances surrounding Lucas’s birth exposed something your husband spent years trying to conceal.”
Alexandre suddenly slammed his hand against the desk.
“Enough! You have no right to discuss this!”
“You’re welcome to leave,” the lawyer replied. “But these instructions were legally entrusted to me by your father.”
Alexandre sat down slowly.
Catherine was twisting her wedding ring so violently that her fingers had turned red.
Mr. Laurent continued.
“Lucas’s mother is named Émilie Bernard. Twelve years ago, she worked for one of Philippe’s companies.”
I frowned.
“Why does that name sound familiar?”
Then I remembered.
Twelve years earlier, Philippe had come home furious one evening.
He told me a young employee had stolen company funds and disappeared.
I remembered asking whether he had reported her to the police.
He said the matter had been handled privately.
“Émilie Bernard,” I whispered. “Philippe told me she was a thief.”
Mr. Laurent looked uncomfortable.
“That is what you were told.”
He slid a document across the table.
It was a financial report containing dozens of transactions.
Several were highlighted in red.
The recipient was a company I recognized immediately.
Alexandre’s investment firm.
The amounts were enormous.
€80,000.
€125,000.
€210,000.
And one transfer for nearly half a million euros.
“What is this?” I asked.
Mr. Laurent took a breath.
“Philippe discovered five years ago that Alexandre had diverted substantial amounts of money from the family business. But the scheme began much earlier.”
Alexandre’s face turned pale.
“Those were legitimate investments.”
“Then why were they routed through accounts belonging to Émilie Bernard?” the lawyer asked.
Alexandre said nothing.
Suddenly, the pieces began falling into place.
“Émilie didn’t steal the money,” I whispered.
Mr. Laurent nodded.
“She discovered irregularities in the company’s financial records. Shortly afterward, she was dismissed and accused of misconduct.”
I looked at Alexandre.
“Did you frame the mother of your own child?”
His eyes flashed.
“She was threatening to destroy everything!”
My heart twisted.
“What did she want?”
He laughed bitterly.
“Money. Recognition. A place in the family.”
Mr. Laurent opened Philippe’s handwritten letter again.
“According to your father’s account, Émilie initially asked for neither wealth nor property. She wanted Alexandre to acknowledge Lucas and help provide for him.”
I could barely believe what I was hearing.
“Philippe knew?”
“Yes. He learned the truth years ago. He secretly supported Émilie and Lucas, hoping Alexandre would eventually take responsibility.”
I stared at the photograph again.
The boy was smiling, unaware of the secrets surrounding him.
“Then why didn’t Philippe tell me?”
The lawyer lowered his voice.
“Because he was ashamed.”
My eyes filled with tears.
“For what?”
Mr. Laurent looked down at the letter.
“Philippe admitted that he helped conceal the financial misconduct. He allowed Émilie’s reputation to be destroyed because he was afraid of losing his son and damaging the family business.”
I covered my mouth.
The man I had spent twenty-three years loving had sacrificed an innocent woman to protect Alexandre.
The same Alexandre who had just treated me like a paid servant.
I felt something inside me break.
But then Mr. Laurent said something that made me look up.
“Your husband spent the final six months of his life trying to repair the damage. He established a trust for Lucas, collected evidence concerning the financial transactions, and prepared written statements clearing Émilie’s name.”
“Why leave me the majority of the estate?” I asked.
“Because he believed you were the only person in this room who would protect Lucas rather than use him.”
Alexandre suddenly laughed.
“So that’s it? Dad gave her everything because he wanted her to babysit my mistake?”
I stood so quickly my chair scraped across the floor.
“Your mistake?”
My voice echoed through the office.
“That little boy is your son, Alexandre. He’s not a mistake.”
For the first time in twenty-three years, I saw genuine uncertainty cross my stepson’s face.
Then Catherine spoke.
“You’re all being sentimental. That child has already received enough money. We need to discuss how Philippe’s estate will be divided fairly.”
Mr. Laurent closed his folder.
“Actually, Madame Catherine, there is another matter.”
He reached for a sealed red envelope.
“Philippe left specific instructions regarding your involvement.”
Catherine froze.
“My involvement?”
The lawyer removed a single sheet of paper.
“Your brother discovered that someone inside the family helped Alexandre conceal those transfers, arrange Émilie’s dismissal, and pressure her into signing a confidentiality agreement.”
Catherine’s lips parted.
I turned toward her.
“Catherine?”
She shook her head.
“This is absurd.”
Mr. Laurent placed a copy of an old agreement on the desk.
At the bottom were two signatures.
One belonged to Émilie Bernard.
The other belonged to Catherine Moreau.
My knees weakened.
Catherine had spent years humiliating me for being a former nanny.
Yet she had helped destroy another working woman’s life to protect her own family’s money.
“You knew about Lucas,” I said.
She remained silent.
“You knew he was your nephew’s son, and you helped hide him?”
Her eyes filled with panic.
“You don’t understand what was at stake.”
I looked at her coldly.
“No. I think I’m finally beginning to understand.”
Mr. Laurent gathered the documents.
“There is one final item Philippe asked me to give Isabelle privately.”
He handed me a small brass key.
Attached to it was a handwritten label.
Apartment 407. Rue Paradis, Marseille.
I stared at it.
“What is this?”
The lawyer’s face softened.
“Your husband purchased an apartment several years ago. He visited it regularly during the final months of his life.”
My heart sank again.
Another secret apartment.
Another woman?
Another life I knew nothing about?
“Who lives there?” I asked.
Mr. Laurent hesitated.
“Émilie and Lucas lived there until last month.”
“Until last month?”
“Yes. They disappeared shortly after Philippe was hospitalized.”
Alexandre suddenly looked toward Catherine.
It was a brief glance.
But I saw it.
And so did Mr. Laurent.
“Why did they disappear?” I asked.
The lawyer leaned closer.
“Philippe believed someone had threatened Émilie after she agreed to testify about the missing company funds.”
My blood ran cold.
“Who threatened her?”
“That’s what we still need to establish.”
I looked down at the key.
Then at Alexandre.
Then at Catherine.
Neither would meet my eyes.
That evening, I returned to the enormous house where I had spent almost half my life.
Every room reminded me of Philippe.
His favorite chair.
His reading glasses beside the fireplace.
The coffee cup he had insisted on keeping even after its handle cracked.
I sat at the kitchen table with the photograph and the brass key.
For hours, I wondered whether I had ever truly known my husband.
Then, just after eleven, my phone rang.
An unfamiliar number.
I answered cautiously.
“Hello?”
A woman’s trembling voice whispered, “Is this Isabelle Moreau?”
“Yes.”
“My name is Émilie Bernard.”
My heart stopped.
Before I could respond, she began crying.
“Philippe told me to contact you if anything happened to him.”
“Émilie, where are you? Are you safe?”
There was a long silence.
Then she whispered, “Please listen carefully. Philippe left something inside that apartment. Something Alexandre and Catherine have been searching for.”
I gripped the telephone.
“What is it?”
“A recording,” she said. “It proves everything. But that’s not why I’m calling.”
Her voice broke.
“Lucas found something in Philippe’s belongings last night. A letter addressed to you.”
I stood up.
“What does it say?”
Émilie began sobbing.
“It says Philippe wasn’t the first person who tried to protect me from Alexandre.”
I felt my pulse racing.
“Then who was?”
She whispered a name.
A name I hadn’t heard in more than twenty years.
And suddenly, I understood why Philippe had married me so quickly after we met.
Why he never wanted me to return to work.
And why he had spent twenty-three years keeping me away from certain people in Marseille.
Because the secret wasn’t only about Alexandre.
It was about my own past.
And the most terrifying realization of all was that Philippe might have known the truth about my family long before I ever met him……
